THE LYMPHE METHOD MLD PRINCIPLES

The LYMPHE Method Lymphatic Drainage, or MLD, is a gentle technique that supports lymphatic flow and promotes fluid movement throughout the body.

This guide is designed to help you practise simple MLD safely at home as part of your lipoedema self-care routine.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialised technique designed to support the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body.

Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses light, rhythmic skin movements to stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to reduce swelling, support immune function, and promote overall wellbeing.

Understanding the core principles of MLD helps ensure treatments are performed safely and effectively.

LIGHT PRESSURE

MLD uses very light pressure to gently stretch the skin without compressing the underlying muscles.

The lymphatic vessels are located just below the skin's surface, so deep pressure is unnecessary and may actually reduce the effectiveness of treatment.

Key Principle:

✔️ Skin stretch, not muscle pressure

✔️ Gentle and comfortable

✔️ Never painful

More pressure is not better.

In fact, pressing too firmly can compress the delicate lymphatic vessels, reducing their ability to transport fluid.

The goal is not to massage muscles or "break up" fat tissue - instead, MLD gently stretches the skin to stimulate lymphatic flow.

SLOW & RHYTHMIC MOVEMENTS

MLD movements are performed slowly and rhythmically to encourage the natural contraction of lymphatic vessels.

The steady pace helps stimulate lymph flow while promoting relaxation of the nervous system.

Key Principle:

✔️ Slow, controlled movements

✔️ Consistent rhythm

✔️ Encourages lymphatic pumping

This gentle pace also helps activate the body's relaxation response, which can reduce stress and make treatment more comfortable for sensitive tissue.

DIRECTION MATTERS

Lymph fluid follows specific pathways through the lymphatic system.

MLD movements are always directed toward healthy lymph nodes and drainage areas where fluid can be processed efficiently.

Key Principle:

✔️ Follow lymphatic pathways

✔️ Guide fluid toward functioning lymph nodes

✔️ Work with the body's natural drainage system

STRETCH & RELEASE TECHNIQUE

Each MLD movement consists of two phases:

Stretch Phase

The skin is gently stretched in the direction of lymph flow.

Release Phase

The pressure is released, allowing the lymphatic vessels to refill.

Both phases are equally important for optimal lymphatic function.

Key Principle:

✔️ Gentle stretch

✔️ Soft release

✔️ Never continuous pressure

CLEAR THE CENTRAL PATHWAYS FIRST

A key principle of MLD is to clear the body's main drainage pathways first, before treating swollen areas.

This usually includes:

  • Above the collarbones

  • The neck

  • Below the collarbones

  • The armpits

  • The abdomen

  • The groin

Treatment typically begins around the neck and upper body before moving to the affected limbs.

This creates space within the lymphatic system, allowing fluid to move more effectively.

Think of it as clearing a drain before emptying a sink; creating space within the central lymphatic system allows fluid from the limbs to drain more effectively.

Key Principle:

✔️ Clear the drainage pathways before moving fluid

A key principle of MLD is to clear the body's main drainage pathways first.

WORK FROM CENTRAL TO OUTER AREAS

MLD is performed by treating the area closest to the body first, then moving farther away.

For example, when treating the leg:

  1. Groin

  2. Upper thigh

  3. Knee

  4. Lower leg

  5. Ankle

  6. Foot

This creates a clear pathway for fluid to move toward the body's drainage points.

Key Principle:

✔️ Central first

✔️ Outer areas second

✔️ Create space before moving fluid

BREATH WORK

Deep diaphragmatic breathing acts as a natural pump for the lymphatic system.

Each breath helps create pressure changes in the chest and abdomen, assisting lymph fluid in moving upward through the body.

Combining MLD with slow, deep breathing can enhance lymphatic flow and improve treatment outcomes.

CONSISTENCY MATTERS

The benefits of MLD are often greatest when treatments are performed regularly.

Consistent support may help reduce swelling, improve comfort, support mobility, and maintain lymphatic function over time.

Key Principle:

✔️ Small, regular treatments are often more effective than occasional intensive sessions

SUPPORT THE BODY

MLD works best when combined with healthy lifestyle habits that support lymphatic function.

These may include:

✔️ Staying hydrated

✔️ Deep diaphragmatic breathing

✔️ Regular movement and exercise

✔️ Compression therapy (when prescribed)

✔️ Good skin care

✔️ Adequate sleep and stress management

Key Principle:

✔️ MLD is most effective as part of a holistic approach

REMEMBER

MLD should feel gentle, relaxing, and comfortable.

More pressure does not create better lymphatic drainage.

The goal is to support the body's natural lymphatic function using light, precise, and rhythmic movements.
