LYMPHATICS 101

The lymphatic system is vital to the health of the body.

It is involved in multiple body functions, such as digestion, cellular transport, and immune function.

The lymphatic system consists of vessels, nodes and lymphatic organs.

The lymphatic system functions to:

✔️ Remove excess fluid.

✔️ Absorb fatty acids and transport fat and chyle to the circulatory system.

✔️ Produce and transport immune cells.

Lymph Fluid

Lymph is a whitish fluid drawn from interstitial spaces that circulates in the lymphatic system.

Lymph is protein-rich and so is prone to infection if left stagnant.

The lymphatic system has no central pump and therefore relies on muscle contractions to move lymph fluid through the body.

Lymphatic Vessels

Lymphatic vessels collect and transport lymph from the interstitial spaces.

The vessels travel throughout the body, roughly following the blood vessels' structure.

A large portion of the lymphatic system is located in the intestines.

Here, the lymphatic vessels collect intestinal fats and transport them through the system.

The fats give the lymphatic fluid its white colour.

Lymph Nodes

Hundreds of lymph nodes are scattered throughout the body.

Estimates range from 500 to 1000, depending on the individual.

A large number of these nodes are located in the abdomen.

Lymphatic fluid contains large molecules like proteins and other waste products.

Lymph nodes are way stations for ‘suspect’ cells, where foreign cells are examined.

Lymph nodes recruit immune cells to destroy invading cells deemed dangerous

Swollen or painful lymph nodes are often the first sign of the lymphatic system dealing with a virus or other infection.

In Summary

✔️ The lymphatic system is a vital part of the immune and fluid management systems.

✔️ It works continuously to remove excess fluid, filter waste, transport immune cells, and help protect the body from infection.

✔️ Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no central pump and relies on movement, breathing, and healthy lifestyle habits to keep lymph flowing efficiently.

✔️ When the lymphatic system is functioning well, it supports healthy circulation, immune function, tissue repair, and overall well-being.
